There are various myths related to
foods which are prevailing in our society. We believe in such myths because
they sound like they could be true. The most common food myths which are still
prevalent in our society are:
1. Potatoes make us
fat
Earlier people used to think that carbohydrate rich foods increases body weight. So for losing weight they eliminate carbohydrate rich foods from diet. Now we that carbohydrates are the body's preferred energy source. So no problem we can eat potatoes in moderate quantity.
2. Fat-free foods
help in losing weight
Fat-free labelled products leads to weight gain. These foods have
same number of calories (may be slightly less) in comparison to other regular
foods. Due to this misconception people take more fat-free labelled foods which
can cause weight gain.
3. Don't take milk immediately after eating fish
People think that taking milk immediately after eating fish make us
sick. As a matter of fact, there is no scientific reason regarding this. Indeed
these can be taken together. There is no problem at all.
4. Eggs increases
cholesterol levels
Eggs provide us various nutrients such as protein, calcium,
vitamins, zinc, iron and phosphorus. It is as per daily requirement of
cholesterol by our body. So if we take one egg daily there is no problem of
cholesterol level.
5. Starving helps in
weight loss
Eating a good diet is more important than not to eat for weight
loss. We should include such food items which suppress appetite and increase
metabolism so that we don't eat too much. So there is no need to starve
ourselves for weight loss.
